The Location Scout and much more

What makes a good Location Scout?

Locations Scout: we know where to go

As Canada’s film production service specialists, FILMS.SOLUTION we always try to anticipate your need for your film, TV show and documentary production. From talent sourcing to budget planning and team building, we can assist you in all aspects of filming your film.

Two of the functions involved in the creation of a film are, of course, those of location scout and location manager.

Our Film location Scout and Location manager travels across Canada searching for locations for your next production. Here we are looking for locations for a Belgian TV show: forest industry, nature and gravel roads.

What is the location scout?

The location scout plays an essential role in the production of a film, mainly at the pre-production level. The search for a specific film location is only one part of his or her field of expertise.

Its specific role is to ensure that the location matches the director’s vision. He takes into account the requirements of the film to find the right location.

It then determines the feasibility of filming on location and obtains other logistical information, such as transportation, accommodation, the possible need for a filming permit, etc.

What are the skills of a location scout?

A researcher is able to network, communicate and negotiate. He or she finds a lot of information on a particular territory and defines the costs associated with production in that area.

Being multilingual is advantageous when shooting abroad. The scout is creative and finds a location that truly reflects the director’s vision.

It’s a challenge, and it’s worth it!

The location scout has an eye for locations. He also has a cultural sensitivity. He meets the inhabitants and knows how to make them aware of the benefits of filming for the region, including financial spin-offs.  Therefore, in addition to being an expert in production logistics, the location scout is friendly and open to the world.

What is the difference between a Location Scout and a Location Manager?

Location scouting and location management are two separate functions, both of which can be done by the same person, but this is not often the case.

The locations scout works in the pre-production phase of the film, mainly doing online research on the destinations before visiting them. He or she then takes photos of the film location so that the production team can get an idea of the location.  The location manager is higher up in the production hierarchy. He supervises, prepares shooting permits and negotiates with territorial organizations. He also finds local resources and the crew, and finally he takes care of the logistics of the project directly at the shooting location.  The location manager works on location during production, in collaboration with the production coordinator and the set manager.

Our network

Through our pan-Canadian production network, the Films.Solutions team is developing a database with a large number of filming locations across Canada. In constant evolution, our database is continually enriched with each of our productions and field research expeditions. The search for human resources, locations and various subjects is part of our activities and broadens our range of mandates across Canada.

Can FILMS.SOLUTIONS provide a Location Scout or Location Manager?

We work with experts in location scouting and location management who have all the required skills.  Rates vary according to the length of the engagement and the importance of the film.  Do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to find out more about our location researchers or any other function for your production team.

Let's make a difference together.
